Trip to New Orleans Wraps Up

September 25th, 2007 . by bryan

I’m staying up waiting for my cab to the airport at an ungodly hour to head home to rush back to work. Who knows why, but those who read this know how even when I’m on vacation I can’t leave my email for more than a few hours. That is until I go to Paris - then I unplug 100%.

Anyway, I digress. The trip went well - was a short one, and the trips to New Orleans on my own have become a welcome rest away from my normally busy day to day life. The trips here usually involve a great deal of napping, strolls, eating incredible food and football. If everyday was like this, and Kimberly would come with me I’d come back in a heartbeat - although it’s obviously ideallistic to thing everything will be like a vacation day - but that’s just the New Orleans pace of life.

Anyway, I’ll write more about what I’ve been up to soon, as well as my extreme dissapointment in my Saints this year, but for now, enjoy some photos from the trip - I’ll try to add captions to explain what the hell is going on in some of these tomorrow when I’m less tired…

MySpace versus Facebook

September 23rd, 2007 . by bryan

So I joined Facebook this weekend, since we are starting to do more and more there for work, and I have to say, I find it much easier to use, more visually pleasing, and more addictive than MySpace.

Anyone checking my site out there and want to visit me on MySpace or Facebook, just look me up via my name… Although after this weekend, I’m less apt to check my MySpace anymore, I’m a Facebook convert.

New Gallery :: Arroyo’s in Las Vegas 2006

Below is my first useage of Flickr integration, and my first frustrations with Wordpress’ WSIWYG editor. Thankfully turning it off solved the problem for me. ANYWAY - photos of the 19 Arroyo’s who made it to Las Vegas. Hope you enjoy as I plan on posting future galleries like this as well.

Am I Dreaming?

December 12th, 2006 . by bryan

I’ve held off on posting about my beloved Saints, but it seems like now is the time to blog about how I’ve been on Cloud 9 all year based on how the Saints have been playing. Now for those of you who don’t know, I don’t JUST root for the Saints since I used to live in New Orleans, or because they are this years “feel good” team. I have been a dedicated Saints/’Aints/Certified Bag wearing die-hard since I was 6, yes since 1986. See example below.

I’m not a big “sports” guy, I love playing softball/baseball/bowling and a few others, but I don’t follow sports, but I do follow Football. Since I was 6 and was introduced to the Saints, I’ve learned what it means to be a true fan - through bad times, more bad times, what the hell is this crap times, oh look a glimmer of hope - nope thanks for nothing times, and more crap times. In all that time, my love and dedication to “my” team has never waivered. I often was teased by fans of “real” teams like the Packers, or other popular at the time teams. I’ve watched some of the bestand most exciting QB’s in the game play the Saints (and win) for years - Joe Montana, Steve Young, Vick, and more. But did I enjoy watching really special players? No, I cursed thier names… all part of being a Saints fan.

Few things in my life equal the rush of being in the Superdome, win or lose it was ALWAYS the highlight of my week growing up. We always had season tickets - where the real fans sat, up in the 600-700 section - thats TWICE as high as any seats in the Staples Center - you big wussies! There are big wide elevators in the Superdome up to the 5th level. Once you turn up to the 6th floor elevator the size narrows to a single file very steep ride. It always looked like something you’d use to acend into heaven. It was a lifelong family joke that there was an unofficial, hidden sign at the base of this escalator that read “oxygen required beyond this point”.

If the Saints won, we would shout “WHO DAT! WHO DAT! WHO DAT SAY THEY GONNA BEAT THEM SAINTS?!?!” Grammer be dammed! I wore a helmet which we bought in a store back then, and I to this day think I have permanant brain damage from all the excited fans who would slap my helmet on the way out of the ‘Dome after a victory; but I loved every minute of it. Between the helmet and the fake apron style pads I used to wear, along with the Saints ring I wore on my finger every day until the cheap metal had left a permant stain on my middle finger, I was dressed to impress. If I had a nickel for every time someone suggested that I go play on the field, that I could do at least as well as those guys, I’d be writing this blog from my villa in the Carribean.

In 1987 the Saints made the playoffs for the first time, winning the NFC West (Before it became the NFC South) I of course thought it was because *I* had moved to town the year before, and I was good luck. Of course the Saints promptly lost the first ever playoff game - but I was there to see it (versus the Vikings). I remember being as sad as I’ve ever remembered at a non-death function, thinking - how can this be it? How can it be over? Over the next few years I learned what it was like to lose. I learned to lovingly call my team “dogs”, “SOB’s”, and how to properly cut out holes in a paper bag and draw a flur du leis on the side, and a tear out of one eye.

I learned all the names - Ricky Jackson, Morten Anderson, Hoby Brenner, Bobby Hebert (ay-bear not her-bert), Eric Martin, Dalton Hilliard, Pat Swilling, and the rest of the Dome patrol. If they wore Black and Gold I knew all about them…

The Saints did it again in 1992 - I was 12 by then, and got really into it. I’d track every score, stat, and would record every final score. The saints won the division again, and lost again in the playoffs (to the Eagles or Chicago I believe) - it was an away game, and was not there. Good thing too, probably would have broken my fraglie Asthmatic heart.

But in 2001 the Saints finally did it, and it took a miracle from the gods to make it happen. This time I was there, even though I had moved to Los Angeles years before. The Saints beat the defending champion Rams on the last play of the game after a muffed punt by Az Hakim and a winning feild goal (see more). Of course the Saints lost the divisional game. This was only the 3rd playoff appearance by the Saints, and the first win it only took 33 years. It would be the last - until this year (hopefully) “gris-gris”.

I’ve watched the Saints with the same enthusiasm as every year. I have the DirectTV SuperFan NFL Sunday Ticket Package and watch every Saints game (including pre-season) in High Definition. I’ve purchased my yearly 2 new Saints caps, I have my BUSH and BREES jerseys, I’ve made the trek to see the re-opening of the Superdome in week 3 when the Saints played the first game in over a year in New Orleans, of course I would be there - and against the dreaded division foes and all around douchebag Michal Vick. I watched as U2 and Green Day perfomed my new anthem “The Saints Are Coming” live together for the first time, and watched the Saints win in HUGE fashion, becoming 3-0. I’ve watched the Saints slowly become the talk of the league, talk of Fantasy Football teams, and America’s sweetheart.

Now the Saints have just beaten the Dallas Cowboys 42-17 IN DALLAS, a team that most thought were the #1 in the NFC and who were 7 1/2 point favorites in convincing fashion. Today the Saints are 2 games ahead of anyone else in the division, in control of thier own destiny to lock up the #2 seed in the NFC, get a bye, and host at least one Divisional game in the Superdome. The Saints have the number one ranked offense in the NFL at 410 yards per game. The passing attack is a league-best 303.5 yard per game. The Saints are averaging nearly 30 yards more per game than the next closest competition, both in the passing department and total yards (381.4), and Benson has boogied so much, so he’s going to need a hip replacement. In watching the highlights featuring audio from WWL radio, I have to say I’ve never heard Jim Henderson sound more excited and gitty. I know how you feel Jim.

Do I dare to dream more? Yes. Have I already speced out and placed holds on fights to New Orleans for every week of the playoffs? Yes. Have I done the same for Miami in the first week in Febuary? Yes I have. I think I’ll continue this dream a bit longer. Wake me up in mid-Febuary and I’ll see if it all was real. Regardless, it’s been one hell of a ride for a city that desperatly needs it. You truly are Saints.

BLESS YOU BOYS! GEAUX SAINTS!
